Dream Kingdom: Harbor Square

Recreating San Francisco at the turn of the Twentieth Century, Harbor Square is an exclusive area to the park. It takes up the southwest corner of the Dream Kingdom and shares the Rivers of America with Frontierland. Although this is a smaller area compared to others, it has some pretty interesting things to see and do.

When guests exit the tunnel from Main Street, they enter a harbor area. On their right are the seaside buildings that house the Ghiradeli Chocolate and Ice Cream and Fisherman's Diner restaurants. Between those two is a bridge to Frontierland. On the left is the Bay City Department Store, a large gift shop. Next to that is the entrance to The New Americans, a historical audio-animatronic show about immigrants to the United States in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. It exits into Melting Pot, a gift shop selling heritage items.

Going up the wharf will take guests to a Chinatown area. Here, they can go through a recreation of the Dragon Gate and enter the Garden of the Twelve Friends. Similar to an attraction in Shanghai Disneyland, this features the Chinese Zodiac represented as Disney characters. Behind this garden is the trackless dark ride, Secrets of Chinatown, where guests search for magical amulets in San Francisco. The ride exits into Chinatown Traders. Nearby is the Mandarin Kitchen, a Chinese restaurant. Chinese Acrobats also perform in this area, lion dancers and all.

Located at the edge of the area is a cityscape section. Here, guests can eat at Golden Gate Grill. It is between the gift shops 49 Street Store and Museum of the Weird, the former selling San Francisco merchandise and the latter selling merchandise themed to the attraction nearby, the Haunted Mansion. This version of the ride is housed inside a recreation of the Winchester Mystery House (which Walt Disney actually visited during the ride's early development stages.) Also in this area is a derailed cable car that has been turned into a Taco Cart.

This area went through a lot of drafts. When designing it, I went with many themes such as the 1940's, California, and the Gilded Age, but those just didn't stick well. Eventually, I decided on San Francisco in the early 1900's, prior to the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. I developed this area to have a "square" area, like Disneyland's New Orleans Square and the Magic Kingdom's Liberty Square, which like those, would feature a Haunted Mansion. I also had thoughts of putting an American History show here. Disneyland has Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and the Magic Kingdom has the Hall of Presidents, not to mention, Epcot has the American Adventure. I wanted a show like those, so I came up with the New Americans.
